8 Common Digestive Problems and How to End Them

There's something about digestive difficulties that makes them hard to discuss in polite company—which leaves many of us suffering one problem or another in silence. What's more, digestive disorders are placing a "growing burden" on Americans, causing an unprecedented number of clinic visits and hospitalizations, says Stephen Bickston, an American Gastroenterological Association fellow and professor of internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. Yet fixes can be as simple as making informed lifestyle changes or taking over-the-counter remedies. Peppermint oil and soluble fiber, for example, can help people with irritable bowel syndrome; a 2008British Medical Journal study suggests that both should be first-line therapies for IBS.

Here's a rundown of the latest medical wisdom on eight common gastrointestinal problems.
Reflux
Symptoms of reflux, such as heartburn, are among the most common digestive ills. In a Swedish study, 6 percent of people reported experiencing reflux symptoms daily and 14 percent had them at least weekly. Such frequent symptoms may indicate a person has GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Aside from being painful, GERD can harm the esophagus over time or even lead to esophageal cancer.
Heartburn typically involves a "hot or burning feeling rising up from the center of the abdomen area and into the chest under the breastbone or sternum," says Michael Gold, agastroenterologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. "It may be accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth, or hypersalivation, or even finding food or fluid in your mouth," particularly at night. Pregnancy, some medications, and consuming alcohol or certain foods can cause heartburn. Kids under age 12 and some adults may have GERD without heartburn, instead experiencing asthma-like symptoms, trouble swallowing, or a dry cough.
Treatment options include drugs that reduce acid levels, such as the proton pump inhibitors Aciphex, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, and Protonix and the H2 blockers Axid, Pepcid, Tagamet, and Zantac. But taking medication is not without risk. In 2008, a study found that a proton pump inhibitor may weaken the heart-protective effect of the blood thinner Plavix in patients taking both medications.
In severe cases of GERD, surgeons can tighten a loose muscle between the stomach and esophagus to inhibit the upward flow of acid. Laparoscopic surgery, which involves small incisions, has been found to lessen scarring and shorten recovery time compared with open procedures.

Peptic Ulcers
If you have unexplained stomach pain, consider this before reaching for a painkiller: "The worst thing to do if ulcers are suspected is to take aspirin or other NSAID [nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug] pain reducers," Gold says. "They worsen it and don't help."
Instead, if you think you have a peptic ulcer—and 25 million living Americans will get one at some point—consider getting tested for Helicobacter pylori, experts advise. By disrupting a protective layer of mucus, that bacterium causes ulcers, which are sores in the lining of the stomach or first stretch of thesmall intestine. Other causes include smoking, which can elevate stomach acidity, and excessive NSAID use. Alcohol use may also be a factor, but it's unclear whether that alone can cause ulcers. (The old theory blaming factors like stress isn't totally wrong: Stress can aggravate symptoms of peptic ulcers and delay healing.)
Left untreated, ulcers can cause internal bleeding and may eat a hole in the small intestine or stomach wall, which can lead to serious infection. Ulcer scar tissue can also block the digestive tract. And long-term H. pylori infection has been linked to an increased risk of gastric cancer.
Ten to 14 days of antibiotic treatment, often combined with acid reduction therapy, can rid someone of H. pylori. Surgery is an option for more severe cases. A 2008 study published in theWorld Journal of Surgery concluded that laparoscopic repair should be considered for all patients with so-called perforated ulcers.
Gallstones
Only a quarter of people with gallstones typically require treatment. That's fortunate, because every year nearly 1 million Americans are diagnosed with these little pebbles, which are primarily made of cholesterol and bile salts. Getting rid of them typically requires removal of the gallbladder, one of the most common U.S. surgeries.

With housefly as its hero, Telugu film Eega has buzzzzz

Making a hero out of an ordinary housefly and managing to create a huge buzz around it. That is what makers of Telugu film Eega have managed to do. It will have a multilingual release, first in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam this Friday. The Hindi version will release about two weeks later.

Even before its release, the story of revenge of a housefly, Eega in Telugu and Naan Ee in Tamil, has created more than a buzz in the film world. In just two weeks, its trailors got five lakh hits on Youtube, impressive for a film where a housefly plays the hero.

"When I say I am making a film on a housefly, there will be wonder, smile. What would be the story? How can you make a fly act? 10-15 percent there will be heckling and thinking has he gone mad? I am still okay with that. But you can't ignore it. That is the USP of the film," said director S.S. Rajamouli

Rajamouli says Eega started as a small-budget experimental film but grew big as it developed. With over 90 minutes of visual effects and realistic animation, the film cost upto 35 crore rupees and will have a multilingual release.

"First time in Indian cinema you have realistic animation characters,'' added Rajamouli.

Rajamouli delivered a super-hit with Magadheera, starring Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Teja, and another hit with Maryada Ramanna that had no big stars. Making a hero out of a housefly is certainly going to be a much, much bigger challenge.

India to give dossier on Abu Jundal during Indo-Pak talks

India will give Pakistan a dossier on 26/11 handler Abu Jundal during the talks between the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries to be held today in Delhi. The dossier will include Jundal's passport issued by Pakistan, indicating the involvement of its state agencies in the Mumbai attacks that took place in 2008.

Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani is in New Delhi for talks with his Indian counterpart. Though he has said that he has been given the mandate to carry forward the dialogue process with India, terror and the recent arrest of 26/11 handler Abu Jundal is likely to overshadow the day-long talks.

"We have seen reports of Abu Jindal and we have requested Indian government to share reports with us and we would definitely try and do something about it," Mr Jilani said soon after his arrival on Tuesday.

Foreign Affairs Minister SM Krishna told "(We) always discussed terror during Indo-Pak talks, will do now also. Whatever Jundal has revealed to our agencies will be evaluated. We will have to make value judgment on whether we can trust Pakistan."

Islamabad says it wants hard evidence from India on Jundal's Pakistan connection, and while they have denied issuing him a passport, on the eve of the talks, Indian security agencies released copies of what they said was Jundal's Pakistani passport.

Sources say these details will be shared with the Pakistani delegation and New Delhi will ask Islamabad to investigate how this passport was issued.

India will share details of the control room Jundal has talked about in Karachi and will again ask for the voice samples of those identified by him. India will also hand over a list of Jundal's Pakistani contacts given by him during his sustained interrogation by the security agencies.

Sources, however, say that no operational details or leads which are being followed up will be shared with Pakistan.

Last week, Home Minister P Chidambaram strongly stated that Jundal's arrest showed there was state support for the 26/11 attack. It evoked a sharp reaction from Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik who said that India was failing to control its own citizens.

Sources say India will also raise the issue of Sarabjit Singh - the Indian who is accused of spying in Pakistan and currently on death row.

The issue of Jammu and Kashmir and friendly exchanges such as visas are also on the agenda. Last month, Pakistan unexpectedly put off a liberalised visa agreement with India at the Home Secretary- level talks.

Separatists from the Valley today met Pakistan Foreign Secretary Mr Gilani. They were divided on the dialogue process between India and Pakistan. The moderates termed it as necessary for building 'mutual trust' while hardliners dubbed it as a 'futile exercise'.

The two sides will also try and make headways on two very crucial issues - Siachen and Sir Creek.

The meeting of the Foreign Secretaries is meant to pave the way for a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the two countries later this year.

Don't blame us, Abu Hamza is Indian, says Pakistan

Pakistan has dismissed India's claim that the arrest of 26/11 handler Abu Hamza, and the information he has provided to interrogators, proves that Pakistani state actors were involved with the attacks on Mumbai in 2008.

"Hazma is Indian. India is failing to control its citizens," said Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik.  "I told (Home Minister) Chidambaram that Hindu extremism is growing in India," he added.

This morning, India's Home Minister P Chidambaram said, "He has confirmed that he was in the control room and he has named a few people who were in the control room...that confirms our  suspicion that this was an organized effort which had some  kind of state support.  The argument that it was non-state actors who were behind the massacre is no longer valid." (Read)

Mr Malik reacted sharply, stating, "Each time India  has accused the ISI of involvement in a terror attack, it has been proved wrong." (Abu Hamza's arrest: Top 10 developments)

Hamza was deported from Saudi Arabia to Delhi and is now being interrogated by intelligence officers and the Delhi Police. He has said that as the attacks on Mumbai began, he was in a control room near the international airport in Karachi.  Supervising the operation there, he has said, were ISI officers and Lashkar commanders including Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi.

After Ajmal Kasab became the only terrorist to be captured alive during 26/11, he has said, all handlers including him were asked to leave Pakistan  He allegedly travelled to Saudi Arabia on a Pakistani passport with a fake name. US intelligence officials and India were alerted to him after he allegedly made a call to Pakistan, that was tracked down by the US.

"We identified him almost a year ago...it was a well-guarded secret...we tracked him.  I think the world appreciates how India is going about tracking every one of the 26/11 masterminds," Mr Chidambaram said.

In discussions with India about its own investigation and trial for those connected to 26/11, Pakistan had told India that Abu Hamza had been arrested.  When asked how Hamza had then managed to leave the country, Mr Mallik said this was not the same man listed in a dossier shared between the two countries.

IT’S STAR WARS THIS JULY IN Tollywood

A spate of big budget movies are all set to battle it out at the box office the coming month

Come July and Tollywood big screens are all set to turn into a battlefield. Some of this year’s mostanticipated films — Rajamouli’s “Eega” starring Nani and Samantha, Trivikram Srinivas’s “Julayi”, Puri Jagannath’s “Devudu Chesina Manushulu” starring Ravi Teja and Ileana, Lakshmi Manchu’s “U Kodathara Ulukki Padathara” (UKUP) starring Manchu Manoj and Deeksha Seth and MS Raju’s “Tuneega Tuneega” that will introduce debutantes Sumanth Ashwin and Rhea Chakroborty— are all releasing in July! Apart from these films, Tamil films like Kamal Haasan’s “Viswaroopam”, and Chakri Tholeti’s “David Billa” are also releasing in Telugu in the same month.

It’s no surprise then that industry insiders say this month is going to be a crucial one for the film industry. “Just this month, business of more than 100 crores is riding on Tollywood,” says Suresh Babu, president, AP Film Chamber of Commerce. He adds that this year has already been a fruitful one with big hits like “Gabbar Singh” and other small films too doing well at the box-office. While this may be a reason to celebrate, there is also a concern whether city theatres can accommodate all the movies at the same time. Suresh Babu adds, “Rajamouli’s “Eega” will kick-start the month and if it’s a hit, theatres will definitely face planning issues, considering they might not have enough screens for all movies. The release dates of some movies may have to be postponed.”

Cinematically too, the month is a crucial one for the actors. Ravi Teja, whose last two films, “Nippu” and “Daruvu” had a thanda response, is looking to break the spell with Puri Jagannadh’s “Devudu Chesina Manushulu” (DCM). “This is my fifth film with Ravi Teja and we are going to work magic again,” says Puri, when contacted.

It’s a testing time for actress Ileana, who is making her comeback to Telugu films after a long hiatus, with two big releases in just one month — Ravi Teja-starrer “DCM” and “Julayi” with Allu Arjun. Meanwhile, Allu Arjun is also in dire need of a hit after “Badrinath”, that released a year ago, failed to make a mark.

Producers meanwhile, are keeping their fingers crossed. MS Raju, whose last film
“Maska” released in 2009 is making a comeback with “Tuneega Tuneega”. He is not only directing the movie, but is also introducing his son Sumanth in this rom-com. This month also marks Lakshmi Manchu’s debut as a producer with “UKUP”. She says, “The film has shaped up well and I am feeling confident,” she says. The movie is expected to give her actor brother, Manchu Manoj, a career boost.
Meanwhile, big budget dubbed films will have to fight with top Tollywood titles. Sobha Rani, producer of the Ajith-starrer “David Billa”, says, “I’m releasing the movie in over 200 theatres as Ajith has a big fan following in AP.” Kamal Haasan’s “Viswaroopam” too may release in July, though the date hasn’t been confirmed.

SS Rajamouli's 'Eega' to be released in 3D in Hindi

Bilingual animation Movie 'Eega', claimed to be southern cinema's most technologically superior movie, will be dubbed in Hindi, which will be converted into 3D version, says producer Suresh Babu.
The socio-fantasy film, releasing worldwide in Tamil and Telugu July 6 with 1,200 prints, is written and directed by SS Rajamouli.
Conversion technology is being used to make the 3D version of the movie, said the filmmakers at a press meet here. Producer Suresh Babu said that movie has cost between Rs.28 crore to Rs.30 crore.

"We are sure to release the 3D version of 'Eega' in compatible theatres in north and Maharashtra. We are releasing the Telugu version 'Eega' and Tamil version 'Naan Ee' in Mumbai and other important centres in north," said Rajamouli.
The Hindi version is expected to come out at the end of the year and the director is confident of "a greater response to the 3D version in Hindi when it is released".
In the film, a house fly plays the protagonist's role, while Kannada actor Sudeep plays the antagonist, who kills a young man who falls for the same girl as him.
